If your asphalt driveway has lost its looks but the base is still solid, an overlay is the smart move. An asphalt overlay works by using your current surface as the foundation. We lay a fresh resin bound layer on top. This gives you all the benefits of a resin driveway - natural stone colours, smooth finish, weed-free surface - at a much lower cost than starting from scratch.
When Is an Overlay the Right Choice?
An overlay works best when the asphalt underneath is still in fair shape. That means no major cracks, no deep potholes and no areas where the base has sunk. Surface wear, minor cracks and fading are all fine. The resin layer covers them completely.
If your asphalt is badly damaged, we may recommend a repair first. We can fill potholes, patch cracked sections and level uneven areas before the overlay goes on. This gives you a strong, even base for the resin surface.

The Overlay Process
We start by cleaning your asphalt thoroughly. Moss, algae, oil stains and loose material all need to go. We use a pressure washer and mechanical cleaning as needed. A clean surface means a strong bond.
Next, we apply a tack coat. This is a bonding layer that sticks the new resin surface to the old asphalt. Then we hand-trowel the resin bound mix across the whole driveway. We use natural stone aggregates bound in UV-stable resin. The layer is around 18mm thick.
We work carefully around manhole covers, drainage channels, kerb edges and planting beds. Every detail is finished neatly. The surface cures in a few hours and you can walk on it the same day.

Your new surface is permeable. Rainwater passes through the resin and into the asphalt below, then into the ground. This stops puddles and meets SUDS requirements for front driveways. No separate drainage is needed.
The surface is weed-free. There are no joints or cracks for weeds to push through. It is also UV stable, so the colour does not fade in sunlight. A simple jet wash once or twice a year keeps it looking fresh.

Can I overlay asphalt that has small cracks?
Yes. Small surface cracks are not a problem. The resin bound overlay covers them completely. We only need to repair deep cracks or potholes before the overlay.
How thick is the resin overlay?
We apply the resin bound mix at around 18mm thick. This is enough to create a smooth, strong surface without raising the level of your driveway too much.
Does the overlay raise the height of my driveway?
By about 18mm. We adjust around thresholds, garage doors and edges to make sure the transition is smooth and everything fits properly.
