What Is a Sub Base?
A sub base is a layer of crushed stone or aggregate, usually type 1 MOT, that sits between the ground and the surface layer. It is typically 100mm to 200mm thick for domestic driveways and patios. We spread it evenly, then compact it using a vibrating plate or roller until it is firm and level.
The sub base does three things. First, it spreads the weight of vehicles and foot traffic across a wide area, stopping the surface from cracking under pressure. Second, it provides a stable, flat platform for the surface layer to sit on. Third, it allows water to drain downward and away from the surface.

- Excavate to the correct depth, removing topsoil and soft material
- Install drainage channels, pipes and soakaways where needed
- Lay and compact type 1 MOT sub base in layers
